Sherborne, Here We Come!

A great "side" reason for Iron Tim's journey to London was to do some on-location sleuthing for the Ironman UK 2006 triathlon, which a slew of our Richmond friends are participating in later this summer. John will be joining their ranks from this end as the local (!) UK entrant. As the day draws nearer, it is safe to say that we can't wait for the giant reunion! Having been by their sides (on the sidelines!) for Ironman Lake Placid 2004, I know what an unbelievable event and enormousproduction it will be!!

So, we thought we'd check out the sleepy village of Sherborne before it was overtaken with the Ironman event and sniff out what it was like in the dead of winter. As you'll see, getting there was more than half the fun!

p.s. I'll have even more Sherborne pictures to add tomorrow (of the actual castle grounds, etc) so check back soon.

John and Tim watching the weather report on our designated travel day! It was really miserable out when we first woke up. Deciding to brave it, we wait for the 381 bus to Waterloo Station. Close-up of John! Close-up of Tim!
Close-up of me! Tim flashes his Oystercard! What a local! John and Tim discuss matters from the 2nd floor of the bus. Very London! Here we are at Waterloo train station.
"Come on, Mar! Let's catch a train to Sherborne!" OK!! Tim scopes out the scene in the station. Where's the coffee?? London weather: 9 Celsius. A balmy 48 Fahrenheit. John gets us a round of delicious coffee.
Mmmmmm... good. Looking for our train, I noticed that the two clocks on either end of the schedule board didn't show the same time! We found our comfy train and settle in for a long ride (made even longer because of track work, so we took a train-bus-train 3+hours each each way!) The boys through the train window. For a second we all thought the train was going to pull away with me on the platform!
All aboard! The guy sitting across from us left his bags unattended... ... which made us sick with worry! I finally get out from behind the lens for a quick smile!
Tim chills out. John is happy (and sideways - sorry about that!) We saw a lot of English countryside on this ride... Time for snacks! How long have we been in this car?
Tim chows down. I'm sleepy! We're finally here! Sherborne station.
John and Tim lead the way to the small main street. Where are we? We're in Sherborne! Here's the main abbey, in the town's main square.
Most of the town's residents look like they've been doing this a while! Quaint streets and lots of peace and quiet. Here we are! The Sherborne School for girls, where many of the Richmond crew will be staying. "Which dorm is yours, Tim?"
That one! Or maybe this one! Sherborne has lots of windy lanes... And even an elevated sidewalk!
