A Day in Cambridge with Magnus and Laura

This past week, fortune (and British Airways) finally brought our good friends Laura and Magnus over to London for a highly anticipated visit! YAY!

Although I was caught up in some heavy work-related planning (Offscreen presented at an educational conference at the Tate Modern on Saturday!) and some follow-up filming for my student film earlier in the week, I joined the gang on a wonderful, sun-filled outing to the town of Cambridge on Sunday. We didn't know that this would be no ordinary Sunday afternoon at the University of Cambridge. In fact, it was Suicide Sunday, a day that marks the end of term and exams, and the beginning of a week of student balls and non-stop partying. [sigh - reminds me of spring formals in Charlottesville... but I digress].

Add the World Cup to this mix, and you have the makings of a vibrant, buzzing Sunday in a picturesque college town!

Magnus and Laura on the bus to King's Cross train station. Next stop: Cambridge. Walking to the main square and Sunday market. Caught on camera! Laura and I cruise the strip...
... and find England-themed cookies!! Laura likes those! And the sun, which decided to come out from behind the clouds. Laura helps John apply sunscreen! Magnus and Laura!
Young lady trying to sell us tickets for the tourist punting boats. Amazing we resisted, eh? It all felt a bit like Venice without all the rules... This canal provided endless enjoyment, as boats constantly knocked into one another. No-one seemed to mind, though. Bumper Punts!
Magnus, always handy with a map, sorts things out for us! Lots of students were hanging out by the canals and enjoying Suicide Sunday. I was particularly pleased to stumble upon St. John's College, as their May Ball had a surf theme! Now that's what I call ivy.
A student takes a quick power nap. Magnus and Laura take their Avengers pose. Girl power! The Bridge of Sighs, Cambridge-style.
Cambridge students give it a go... ...and some opt to swim instead! John and I smile for the camera! :) What does that sign say?
Oh, right. Don't lean your bike against the wall! Laura gets down with her roots! Enjoying some pints at the Anchor Pub. Magnus and Mar.
We were right on the water... ... and enjoyed all of the punters. Especially those draped in Brasil sarongs. Later, we took a walk through some fields. Drink in hand, I found some buttercups.
Cambridge buttercups... ...look just like their American counterparts. "Did you say watch out for the nettles?" Back on the tourist track, Laura points out the street gutters, which look just like the "joobs" in Tehran. I'll have to take a picture when I'm there next week and compare!
Laura as Buttercup Princess! And we pound the pavement some more. Classic shot in front of King's College. Back at home, we settle in for one last meal!
What a great way to end the trip! Goodbye Laura and Magnus. See you soon!!!
