Laura Visits London!

To make up for the month-long hiatus I have taken from this site (more on that later), I offer fun images from this past "bank holiday"(i.e. long) weekend, spent relaxing with dear friend Miss Laura aka "Laurinha" Baker as she breezed through London on the tail end of a European business trip. Having just visited Madrid, Prague, Bratislava and Berlin, she decided that a chilled-out weekend of good food and great conversation in London was all she needed. Although the weather was less than sunny and our grand plans to spend a leisurely Saturday tanning at the new London Fields Lido were thwarted, we managed to find other creative ways to amuse ourselves.

Can't wait to see Laura again...

And perhaps this will inspire other faraway friends to make it out here.

xx

The sign says it all! Welcome to Hackney Laura. Snapshot on the bus! Laura and I go to La Vie en Rose, a French cafe on Broadway Market near my house. We're amazed that the waitress brought us a whole carafe of water. Not very common around these parts.
We leave the cafe for a walk through the Saturday Farmer's Market. We also admire the lovely details that make Hackney what it is... so reminiscent of Brooklyn, if you ask me. There are even gas tanks which recall the other Twin Towers of NYC, gone long ago... Laura knows where she is.
She is caught in a moment of market bliss. Tasty olive oil! Lots of bakery items... We take a stroll through London Fields on our way home.
Laura says "These trees remind me of Virginia". Back at home, we relax with a cup of tea in the back patio. We have lots of baby trees in the yard. Why do I suddenly look so sleepy? :)
Laura and I both swear by red "power" sneakers. She actually says they make her walk faster... Later, after Laura, Jamie and I saw a great film (The Lives of Others), we strike a pose at a famous French pub in Soho. Jamie draws Laura a map to help her meet some friends in Shad Thames. Here he pretends to be very busy for the paparazzi.
Laura meets up with Barbara and others near the Tower Bridge. The next night we cook Laura a farewell dinner, complete with a special bottle of wine she was given in Spain, from the year of her birth. As the cork crumbles, we wonder whether the wine has stood the test of time... I don't really think so...
Laura is sad and pours the Spanish vinegar down the drain. We cook dinner and all is well with the world.

Ah, to think of Virginia's trees in London! They just need to be a few times taller I think... Lovely pics, glad you had such an infamous visitor stop by!
